What is the Reward for the Person who put aside from his wealth specifically to maintain a masjid from the Masjids of Allah?

Question & Answer

Q: What is the bounty (reward) for the person who put aside from his wealth specifically to maintain a masjid from the masjids of Allah?
A: All praise is to Allah, and blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and companions, concerning to what follows:

So indeed Allah Glorified is He and free from imperfection has praised the person who constructs His masjids (houses of worship) for He said:

إِنَّمَا يَعْمُرُ مَسَاجِدَ اللَّهِ مَنْ آمَنَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ وَأَقَامَ الصَّلاةَ وَآتَى الزَّكَاةَ وَلَمْ يَخْشَ إِلَّا اللَّهَ فَعَسَى أُولَئِكَ أَنْ يَكُونُوا مِنَ الْمُهْتَدِينَ. {التوبة:18}

“ And the masjids of Allah shall be maintained only by those who believe in Allah, and the Last Day, perform As-Salah (Iqamat as Salah), and give Zakat, and fear none but Allah. It is they who are on true guidance” Surah Tawbah verse 18.

Very from the masjids’ structure (constructing the building) and the establishments of the masjids, and restoration, and taking care of it, and its maintenance. And what is included in doing this action also is Sadaqah Jariha ( Sadaqah that benefits a person, that keeps growing after his death) even if the contribution sums up to little. Indicating from what is apparent in a hadeeth:

Narrated by Abu Hurayrah he said:

The Messenger of Allah sallahu wa alayhi wa salam said: ‘the rewards of the good deeds that will reach a believer after his death are knowledge which was taught, and spread, a righteous son he left behind, a Mushaf copy of the Quran as a legacy, masjid he has build,  a house that he build for wayfarers, a canal that he dug, or charity that he gave durning his life time when he was in good health. These deeds will reach him after his death.’ Collected by ibn Majah, and hadeeth was graded Hassan by Shaykh al Banni.

And from the bounty of spending on the masaajid (houses of Allah), and its construction (being build), and the contribution (partaking) it is continuously (in maintaining them). It is apparent from the Prophet sallahu wa alayhi wa salam that he said:

“Whoever builds a masjid for the sake of Allah, it’s like a Sandgrouse’s nest, or even smaller. Allah will build for him a house in Paradise.” Collected by ibn Majah, Al-Banni graded it as Saheeh.

As-Sinde said in his explanation of the hadeeth collected by ibn Majah:

“ And his saying ‘like a Sandgrouse’s nest’,the nest is the spot of the Sandgrouse (small bird) which the bird camps in the nest, and lay its egg, because the Sandgrouse’s nest is hollow out of dirt. Thus mentioning of this is for the usage of magnifying (exaggeration) in the smallness (size, and amount of something). Otherwise for the littlest of the masjid that it be a place for one person to pray. In addition the chain of narration is correct and the men (narrators) of the hadeeth are trustworthy,” end of quote.

Al Haafith ibn Hajar in Fatah al Baree said:

“Majority of the scholars hold the position that al-mubalagah ( magnifying {the smallness} related to size, and amount of something) because the place which the Sandgrouse’s nest about,  is for putting in its egg, and sitting on it. This is not sufficient amount of size for the Salah in it, and it was said rather its an literal meaning and it means increasing the masjid amount (numbers of masjids and capability), and that be the purpose of increasing the number (amount of masjids) or sharing a group in building a masjid, so each portion falls on one of them this ability (meaning easy upon them by sharing in it construction ).” End of quote.

In two authentic collections (al Bukharee and Muslim) that the Prophet sallahu wa alayhi wa salam said:

“He who builds a masjid and he desire with it the Face of Allah, for Allah builds for him a liking to it in Jannah (Paradise).”

Imam An-nawi said in explaining the greatness of the reward:

“ It implies in his saying ‘liking to it’ is of two affairs:

First of the two; that it means, Allah the Most High builds for him the likes of it (in Jannah because he builded a masjid), in the terms labeled as the house. And concerning its description in the capacity (volume and size) and other things related to its description. So it is well known about the bounty of the description of it, that its description is from what no eye ever seen, nor ear ever heard, no heart of a man ever felt.

Second: that it means that the bounty of  the houses of Jannah is like the bounty of the masjid, comparing it to the houses of the world” end of quote.

It was previously explained the bounties of building Masaajids and its construction in the following fatwaaa: 10427 , 35601, 50965, and Allah knows best.
